Made In Newcastle is SEW hot right now!

The Made in Newcastle Sewing Cafe is ready to accept 'Spinsters' .. The term "spinster" originally identified girls and women who spun wool. In mediaeval times, this was one of the few livelihoods available to a woman in order to live independently of a male wage.
Of course we will also welcome men and any other gender that wishes to use the machines!

What's more, we now have a new machine. A brand new lovely all singing all dancing zig-zagging machine !!

The sewing cafe is under a bit of a make-over , that being Yve Ngoo, Maureen Gallagher and Jo Brossman will be the needle mistresses who will programme sewing events, sewing machine rotas (when applicable), keeping the area inviting and tidy and being general busy bods in the vicinity. Thanks to Karina for the lovely new sign directing people to the Sewing Cafe.
Please encourage (responsible) sewing activity!

Jo has an idea for a sewing/textile group to meet on a regular basis to exchange skills and tips, if anyone is interested. Sounds like a plan to me - and she already has would be corsetieres clambering for a master class.

Apart from sewing cafe related news - the first art opening really brought the building alive, demonstrating it's full potential.
Geez.. we are soooooooooooo London!!! ( just better)

Feature in the Sewing directory

The Made in Newcastle Shop has been lucky enough to have been featured in the Sewing Directory
http://www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk
The idea of The Sewing Directory arose when they realised that information regarding sewing businesses, course and groups is scattered all over the internet and it is often difficult to find what you want. That combined with the lack of places to advertise Sewing businesses lead to the creation of The Sewing Directory.

Lady Luck is coming to toon

MIN is very pleased to announce that Leona Baker, founder of the huge indy label 'Lady Luck Rules Ok', will be visiting our lovely little shop as part of her 'Jewellery Workshop & Trade Secrets Talk' mini UK tour. Yippee!
The event will be on Saturday 28th August from 2pm to 5pm. So here's the lowdown:

After 3 sold out Trade Secrets Talks and 5 sold out Jewellery Workshops LLROK has combined the two events to take on a mini tour around the UK.
The talk will cover topics such as how to start, run & grow an independent creative business; how to successfully sell online; PR, marketing and social media; wholesale and trade shows; and how to deal with the tough stuff like competitors and copycats.

The jewellery workshop will reveal all their unique production methods & materials including how they make their personalised jewellery, enamel & gold charms and lots more. They'll also be sharing the importance of sampling, working with manufacturers, sourcing materials and practical tips on getting the best results. These wonderful tips & techniques can also be applied to many other products.

LLROK's London talks & workshops have been attended by artists, graphic designers, illustrators, boutique owners, jewellery designer/makers & folk looking to turn that first seed of an idea into a viable product to make & sell.

This jam packed 3 hour event will inspire and fuel your creative abilities, so don't miss out.

Launch Success

Well, the MIN team can report a very successful Launch! As we opened our doors for the first time, people were actually queuing, waiting to get in - very exciting! Within minutes the retail space was full. During the day the Doodle jam wall, starting as a clear space, was filled with lots of creative doodles, the Free shop went down a treat with many depositing and taking away many wonderful goods. The fashion show was a huge success with the creative 'wares' of our artists and designers gracing the MIN stairs and retail space on the wonderful models. By 6.00, when we shut our doors, sales were great, MIN staff were jubilant (and tired...) feet were put up and we prepared to rejuvenate ourselves for the next day of opening - Tues 13 of July!

Featured Designer Makers: Cush The Cushion and Chair Company

CUSH began on a sunny Sunday morning by two creative souls with a dream to rescue, revamp and reuse chairs and fabrics.

We rescue one off tapestries, embroideries, vintage linens and preloved furniture.

We take inspiration from the pieces and use our unique style to revamp and breathe designer life into each cushion and chair combo.

Our zealous energy goes into creating each piece for you, the new owner to love and reuse, hopefully for generations to come.

Our eco plight
Where possible the CUSH designers source recycled pieces. In the future we hope that 100% of our products will be made from recycled materials and eco friendly paint.

Bansela Free Shop

Bansela (Zulu) – express thanks in a tangible form, give a small present

As part of the launch of Made in Newcastle we will be holding a Free Shop.

The idea is you bring whatever you have surplus of and take away things you need.

You could bring, for example:

Clothes, music, books, small items of furniture, poems, whatever you have grown in your allotment or garden, pieces of art, Tweed skirts, old buttons, wool, tea cups, a half-finished crochet project that you gave up on, tools, drawings, a dance, a skill ...

Be creative. Think about what you have to offer and what would be of value to you.
