If you fancy a change in pace how about swapping your cat chat for a coffee break, your house tidy for a quick inspiration session with fresh minds on the topic and your daily blog read for a sneaky peak over a co-workers shoulder at their latest project. Maybe you'll even find someone to collaborate with on your own latest project.

Newcastle, as I pointed out last post, is full of social things to do if you're a creative type. So what about actually getting some work done? That can be done in good company too and what better way to meet a strong and supportive group of friends, with their own connections, resources and skills. It'll only be a matter of time before you're sharing skills, organising to swap resources and getting to know your brand new connections.

Co-working days? I don't know, they sound corporate and expensive...
Rest assured, they're not, a good selection of them are completely free. Some happen in a pub or cafe, no office cubicles for you.

Here are a few of the co-working days that I've learned about recently. I'm sure there are many more, so feel free to add your own by commenting on this post.

Space 2 Create
Space 2 Create meets weekly at the Settle Down Cafe, Wednesdays 6pm-8pm. All creative types are welcome and encouraged to take part in skill shares, participate in creative events and happenings and indeed organise their own using the combined support and skills of the group.
Space 2 Create is taking a small break for the summer, as most of it's members are involved in festival season workshops, however the Facebook group stays open all year round and is a great platform for sharing ideas and plans on.

Maker Space Newcastle
Described as a "communal garden shed full of mad inventors", the Maker Space is based in The Cottage, located round the back of the Star and Shadow Cinema. Maker Space is the ideal place for you if you've ever taken apart your old console or wondered how to get that Commodore64 in the loft working again. You can come along to one of their drop in sessions between 6pm and 8pm every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month for free to find out what it's all about. There is a small monthly membership fee of £10 which pays for all the things you might use at Maker Space (wifi, consumables, buying new equipment etc.), which is explained fully on on their Join Us page.

Newcastle Jelly
"A casual co-working event for freelancers, homeworkers, small/micro business owners or anyone who wants to work somewhere different alongside others". I had a chat on Twitter with @NewcastleJelly and it sounds like the kind of event where you could get a great mixture of creatives and makers. I imagine Bar Loco (their venue) being filled with designers, knitters, illustrators, writers and more. Jelly is a relatively new event so there's no expectations and the group is very welcoming to new people. I'll be at the next one myself, you can book tickets (free, it's just so they have the right amount of spaces) on their Eventbrite page. Newcastle Jelly is every other Tuesday, from 10.30 until 5.30, you don't have to stay all day and it's free.

Okay, maybe you want something a bit more office based? How about these then?

The Toffee Factory
One of the newest additions to the Ouseburn area, the Toffee Factory is full of offices, communal spaces and meeting rooms that can be accessed as part of the shared office space for only £10 a day. So if you're not ready for a permanent space yet but might fancy one in the future "these high quality workstations allow you to get a foothold at the heart of the North East’s newest creative industries community". You'll be sharing the building with some fantastic creative businesses and agencies, small and big. You can contact their team for more info on the shared office space, they're lovely people.

Other events that might be of interest to creative minded people:

The Late Shows - Happening on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th May. "The Late Shows is a free culture crawl around Newcastle and Gateshead with many popular venues normally closed in the evening opening their doors after hours on a Friday and Saturday night." Some of the highlights for me will be Northern Print, The Biscuit Factory and oh who am I kidding? I want to do it all. Two nights had better be enough.

Global Sustainability Jam - "One weekend in October, creative, passionate people will meet, form teams & get to work in an energetic, global, face-to-face event. They'll have fun creating brand-new real-world designs, projects and initiatives which might make a difference."

The Big Draw - I've heard there will be a Big Draw in Newcastle this year. The Big Draw is held in October in cities across the country, with the aim to raise the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. "The Big Draw is now a month-long festival of over 1500 events organised by national and regional museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries, schools and community centres across the UK." Start sharpening your pencils now!
If you're organising a creative event or know of one we would be interested in, please pass on the details. MiN is always excited to know new people and get involved in new things. See you next update.
Britt Coxonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05747532047445160300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078602673832872173.post-91041726497212404202012-05-09T10:35:00.003-07:002012-05-09T10:40:54.553-07:00Getting Out!I'm self employed and work from home (like many of the MiN gang), that means that I spend most of working day alone. There are certainly perks, I don't have to tailor my music to others tastes and only have to make one cup of tea when I go to the kitchen. In this situation it's easy to feel cut off from the creative community and as a result lose inspiration, motivation and patience with your work.
You are not the only creative person in town. There are many social events for the creative community in Newcastle, they cater for all sorts of creative folk, photographers, illustrators, designers, knitters, crafters and more. Here are a few of the groups, regular social events and creative hang-outs that happen in Newcastle:
Design Interest - If you're reading this there's a good chance that you appreciate good design. Every month or so Design Interest gets together to talk design with regulars and guests doing quick presentations on a design related topic. The group is a great place to share your latest project with friends and receive useful critique.
A great chance to get the camera (or phone) out and take some good photos of absolutely anything you like. The walks usually begin and end in a cafe or pub so there's lots of socialising to be had.
Paper Jam Comics Collective - The stereotype of the comics fan is a 30-something year old basement dweller with bad bathing habits. The Paper Jam Comics Collective throw all of those stereotypes out of the window, proving once and for all that comics are for everyone. The collective meets in Travelling Man on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, talks, draws and generally has a laugh. We'll ignore the fact that the meets happen in the basement.
Tyne Twestival - It's been all quiet on the Tyne Twestival front recently. If you're on Twitter why not give us a follow (we're @min_tweets) and we'll see about organising our own Tweet-Up.
Think making friends, not contacts."

All this talk of books has reminded me of two brilliant little projects that I really want to share with you. In fact the two marry together quite nicely. About two years ago a young man by the name of Luke walked into Made in Newcastle 1 (On Nun Street) and presented myself and my colleague with a bundle of books... bit odd we thought.. but all became clear, as he went on to explain that he was part of an initiative called Book Crossing.

The ethos behind the scheme is that you breath new life into once loved works, with the simple aim of connecting people through books. The idea is that instead of just letting your old favorites collect dust, you "Release" them into the wild to be found and loved by another reader. Be that giving it to someone you know, or leaving it somewhere for someone to find. Book Crossing is the act of giving a book a unique identity number, so as the book passes from reader to reader, it's journey can be tracked through the Book Crossing web site. There are currently 8995,204 book traveling through 132 countries. It's free to join and I have to admit I got a geeky thrill when I "caught" my first wild release whist on a day out in Wylam!

With the increase in popularity of e-books and Kindles I was inspired to read about another "real" book loving scheme called the Little Free Library. Two years ago Todd Bol from Madison Wisconsin wanted to honor the passing of his late mother, a former teacher and book lover. So Bol built a miniature model of a library, filled it with books for anyone to take and placed it outside his home. From that simple idea hundreds of similar Little Free Librarys have popped up on lawns and in community spaces all across the globe.
A place where you can ask about the obscure bands you like and not be ridiculed. Or be informed of bands you've never heard of and even in some cases, find new friends to go and see these amazing bands with. Over the years these stores saw a demise due to the popularity of bigger high street brands and the increase in digital formats. But in recent years these gems of independent businesses have seen a revival. To this end "Record Store Day" was created, to celebrate the unique culture of record stores and it is the perfect excuse for music fans to come out and support their favourite artists and enjoy a day celebrating music with like minded people.

So this got me thinking about the "music" inspired items that our talented Made in Newcastle makers have been creating.

Well yesterday was such a lovely sunny day and today looks set for more of the same. This can only mean that spring has well and truly finally sprung!

Time to start thinking about warmer weather fashions and this year the trend for shorts keeps on rocking. This season's shorts are high waisted cut and vintage inspired. BoBu Couture is making them in a myriad of textiles and colours from vintage silk taffeta, to kitsch retro prints and bold florals.

Now the weather has picked up, it's time for us fair weather bikers to dust off our saddles and head back onto the open roads. With this in mind, how about this unique and handsome hand stitched saddle bag from Man About Town? It hangs from the bottom of your saddle, with enough space for a puncture repair kit, a spare inner tube or a few tools.

Being as this is Newcastle and for those of us forced to rise bright and early in this fair city, we know all to well, that even on the warmest of spring days, there can be a nip in the air! So the perfect solution to this is a beautiful, unique, hand knitted head wrap. This gorgeous Irish Granny creation is definitely a one-off. Made of very soft 50% lambs wool and 50% acrylic, in subtle yellows with golden brown and green pure wool highlights. Finished with a pretty wooden button.
Comics, comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, manga, sequential art - however you want to refer to it, the CCC wants to celebrate everything about telling stories in pictures. Whilst it won't be on the same scale as some of the bigger UK comic conventions, we're going to have a full range of activities, including: talks and panel discussions, workshops, and a hall of stalls where you can meet some of the finest comic-creating talent from the region and beyond.
This very worthy cause is after some lovely artists and crafters to have stalls at their event.

A percentage of all takings from the day will go to the charity. If you aren't having a stall seriously consider coming along to have a shop. Some of our MiNnies will be there including Susan Heaford - pHzzz who sent us the info for this post.

We had peered into its windows many times, having fallen in love with the staircase and the large space at the back, not to mention great location.

Potential sparked and crackled off the walls. The weather was cold but a warm glow came from within 79 Grainger Street as we got to work transforming it into our new home.

It was a miraculous transformation, in as little as 10 days we brought the shop into being. We tamed the horror of the fridge on the first floor, found new ways to make floors and ended up with a cosy spot to hide and make during the long Winter months.

It's been a whirlwind ride. There's always been something going on at 79 Grainger Street, a regular hive of activity for all involved. Spring brought a nice fresh look to the shop, it was so nice to see that we picked a spot that the sun would sit on for most of the day.

During Spring we got many visitors to the shop, some new friends, some old. Some fury, some frilly.

It's hard to believe we were in there a whole six months. It went by so quickly. It felt even faster than when we were in 22 Nun Street for those short three months. Time is a funny thing. We've come a long way, we've all grown a bit in our own way.

Goodbye 79 Grainger Street. I will miss you, you crazy, messed up, brilliant shop. We will all miss you. Thanks.Britt Coxonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05747532047445160300noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078602673832872173.post-70245605697267646582011-05-21T03:48:00.000-07:002011-05-21T04:21:33.567-07:00Nearing the endToday sees the last day of the inaugural Newcastle Fashion Week. Its been a MEGA event with lots of exciting things going on all around the city and will hopefully go some way to putting Newcastle on the Fashion map. I guess what we really hope is that this event will help encourage independent designers to start/keep their business in Newcastle and help indy shops (the few that there are in the city) thrive.

As we say goodbye to Fashion Week, we also say "so long" to 79 Grainger Street. On the 31st May, in only 10 days time, Made In Newcastle will be shutting up shop at 79 Grainger street. We've been there for 6 MONTHS and can scarce believe it, the time has gone so quickly.
Those of you who have been following the MiN project since its birth last year, will know that foremost it is an empty shop project and we can only be based in a premises for a temporary period. Ideally we would love to stay in a place on a permanent basis and have a space which offers affordable workshops as well as the gallery and shop. The reality is though that the price is too high and we just can't afford it. This city needs more independent shops though and its something that the MiN collective feel strongly about.

We will be looking for a new base and in the meantime we'll continue to do stuff online and run events around the city, just not from the Grainger St property. You can keep up to date with all our antics on the blog and on our website.

Over the last 6 months at the 79 Grainger premises, its been a pleasure having your support and we're very grateful to Thomas Cook for letting the space to us & giving us the opportunity to showcase the city's artistic talent. We also must thank Newcastle City Council for the financial support they have given us.

Just one last thing to say, before we shut the shop on close of play 31st May - our advise is:
"H'way and geet yourself doon there, quick like"!

Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985645005253316071noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078602673832872173.post-13171264052865672102011-05-20T02:38:00.000-07:002011-05-20T03:07:54.380-07:00Ncstl Fashion Week Guest DesignerYippee its Friday!!

The guest maker post today is about Rochelle Laine. She enjoys using bright prints with a variety of colours and including quirky details to each garment resulting in a vibrant collection. Amelia also likes to use classical shapes usually inspired by past fashions and she often references the 60s and 70s in her designs. She describes her current collection as bright, fun and easy to wear whether it be for a festival or to a party.

Amelia is currently showcasing several of her pieces in the shop, one of our personal favourite pieces is her cute & summery butterfly print dress - gorgeous!

The second of our guest makers to highlight today is Dean Blair. A self taught designer born and bred in Newcastle.
Since an early age he has loved fashion and been determined to get ahead in this competitive industry. He began making things as a teenager when he used to customize jeans for his family and up-cycle old clothes to give them a new lease of life and revamp them. Dean still enjoys the challenge of customising unwanted second hand clothing into a new desirable piece as he can get really creative and experimental.

Truly a self-made designer, Dean grew up on a council estate in an area where opportunities are not in abundance - far from it. He never studied fashion, mainly because of funding and understands how hard it can be to find your feet and get the support you need in a lower socio-economic environment. His family have really supported Dean throughout the years in following his dreams and are always there for guidance.

Today Dean's designs and makes his own range of clothes, costume wear and accessories under the brand name 'BUJU'.

Over the last 10 years he has worked as a freelance designer on many different projects including designing and styling girl bands for tours and video shoots and making costumes for dancers in the uk and abroad.

He hopes one day he can achieve his dream and work alongside some of the top designers and maybe becoming a big name in the fashion industry.Lucyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985645005253316071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078602673832872173.post-45750524990931483882011-05-17T01:20:00.000-07:002011-05-17T02:25:50.647-07:00Ncstl Fashion Week Guest DesignerMorning everyone. Run by Gradley along with members of his family the ethos is about being understated yet stylish.
The concept for the brand originated when watching British Style Genius on BBC2 in the autumn of 2008. Gradley was inspired and came up with the idea of creating his own ethically aware fashion label. With previous experience of working in retail in Britain and Canada and working as part of the Diamond and Rings Merchandising team for two major Jewellers in London, Gradley already had a background in fashion. At the dawn of 2011 Subtle Clothing was brought into the world.

Each design is created to be stylish, fashionable and underpinned throughout by SC's understated viewpoint and the world’s penchant for acting like a peacock. The theme for their first design is the weather, executed in a quirky and subtle way. This was inspired by the British passion for talking about the weather, whilst making small talk with friends, family and/or strangers.
The summer design has been screen printed using the CMYK process onto a white organic cotton t-shirt, certified organic by the Soil Association. The print will be limited to 700 organic cotton t-shirts by t-shirt colour and is the inspiration for the range name – “700” by Subtle Clothing. Each t-shirt will contain a label stating 'This t-shirt is one of 700 lovingly created by Peacocks, for Peacocks.
